Live analysis becomes more important than dinner
Dinner was served. The panel required eleven analysts to determine what it meant.
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner began as a formal gathering of journalists, politicians and celebrities. Within minutes, however, the actual event became secondary to cable television’s live analysis of people walking toward tables.
A correspondent stationed near the ballroom entrance reported that several guests appeared “comfortable but alert.” A second analyst agreed, noting that the room contained a significant number of chairs and that many attendees seemed likely to sit in them.
The network introduced a touchscreen diagram identifying three emerging dinner zones: the podium, the tables and an unexplained region labeled POTENTIAL MOVEMENT. Nobody had moved yet, but the panel warned viewers that movement could occur at any time.
This is a fluid dining environment.
“A guest could begin with the salad, pivot toward the bread and still preserve strategic access to dessert,” one fictional commentator explained. UUEBCAST emphasizes that nobody actually said this, although somebody absolutely should have.
The panel expanded to eleven people after a waiter placed water near a senator. A former campaign adviser called the decision deliberate, while a veteran correspondent cautioned against reading too much into a beverage that had not yet been consumed.
Analysis intensified when an unidentified person laughed off-camera. The sound was replayed six times, slowed down, enhanced and submitted to a bipartisan panel charged with determining whether the laugh was authentic, tactical or caused by somebody dropping a roll.
BREAKING: Dinner has been served. Sources close to the bread basket describe the situation as warm, developing and lightly salted.
By the time the featured speaker reached the podium, the evening had already been declared historic, unprecedented and still developing. A breaking-news banner confirmed that dinner was being served.
At press time, analysts had not established whether anybody enjoyed the meal. Enjoyment remained possible, although several panelists warned that dessert could reshape the entire night.
